EnPAT: Safe Transformer Oil from Thai Oil Palm, developed by the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC) under NSTDA, has received three awards at the 12th International Exhibition of Inventions (IEI 2026) in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China. The achievement reflects the strength of Thai research in transforming domestic biological resources into high-value energy innovations with international recognition.

The work was developed by Dr. Boonyawan Yoosuk, Head of the Clean Fuel and Advanced Chemicals Research Team under the Low Carbon Energy Research Group, together with her colleagues. The innovation was selected by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) to represent Thailand in the competition and exhibition.

At IEI 2026, EnPAT received the NRCT Special Award for the Excellent Invention, a special award presented by the National Research Council of Thailand for outstanding invention. It also received a special award from the Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association, recognising work of the highest standard of excellence, as well as a Gold Medal: Award Certificate of Achievement for the Invention from the Chinese Association of Inventions.

EnPAT is a bio-based transformer oil derived from Thai palm oil and developed through more than seven years of research. With a fire point above 300°C, classification as a less flammable Class K fluid, 97% natural palm oil content, and over 95% biodegradability within 28 days, the innovation offers both enhanced safety and improved environmental performance compared with conventional mineral oil. EnPAT is designed for use as an insulating and cooling fluid in electrical transformers, offering a safer and more sustainable alternative to conventional mineral oil in power distribution systems.

This success highlights the capability of Thai researchers to develop practical energy technologies from the country’s own resource base and elevate them to the international stage. It also demonstrates the potential of oil palm, an important Thai biological resource, to be further developed into a value-added product that supports the energy sector.

EnPAT represents progress in the development of transformer oil that is safer and more environmentally friendly, while aligning with the broader direction of the energy transition. The international recognition received through this exhibition reinforces the role of research and innovation in creating sustainable technologies for future energy needs and strengthening Thailand’s presence in the global innovation landscape.
