On 12 May 2026, at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Thailand, Professor Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong, President of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), joined the opening session of the 2026 Country Operations Mission (COM) to exchange strategic perspectives on Thailand’s development direction under the 2026–2029 cooperation framework. Mr. Aaron Batten, Country Director of ADB for Thailand, welcomed participants to the meeting.

At the forum, NSTDA reaffirmed its role as Thailand’s Research Engine, emphasizing research, science, technology and innovation as key drivers of economic and social transformation. The agency highlighted the importance of strategic investment in people and innovation to strengthen Thailand’s global competitiveness and resilience amid growing global challenges, including geopolitical uncertainty, climate change, human resource constraints, and economic vulnerability.

NSTDA presented its New Research Engine approach, which focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration and mission-oriented research to address Thailand’s real needs and deliver broad-based benefits. The approach aims to improve livelihoods and create new opportunities through the use of technology and innovation. Key priorities include reducing costs and increasing productivity in agriculture, strengthening SMEs for competitiveness in modern industries, preparing for an ageing society through digital healthcare platforms, and reducing educational inequality through personalized learning systems.

A major focus of NSTDA’s engagement with ADB is investment in human capital and innovation. NSTDA emphasized that people are the most important strategic infrastructure in the innovation ecosystem. Collaboration with ADB is expected to help expand high-skilled talent development and narrow skills gaps in strategic sectors such as AI, semiconductors, wellness, and clean energy, while supporting Thailand’s transition from a technology adopter to an innovation creator.

NSTDA also underscored its readiness to support resilience and inclusive growth through advanced technology solutions that help de-risk private sector transition to Industry 4.0, promote smart agriculture, strengthen Thai SMEs, and accelerate the shift toward clean energy and Net Zero goals. By linking research to practical large-scale application, NSTDA aims to help drive Thailand toward long-term prosperity and sustainability.

The COM serves as a joint planning platform between ADB and Thailand through the Public Debt Management Office, Ministry of Finance, to identify development priorities and shape appropriate future support.
