The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), through its National Energy Technology Centre (ENTEC), in partnership with the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA) and the ASEAN Secretariat, convened the “Capacity Building Workshop on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for Clean Energy Project Developers in ASEAN” at Pullman Bangkok King Power. The workshop was supported by EU - ASEAN cooperation through the Technical Assistance Facility to the Green Team Europe Initiative (TAF-GTEI).

NSTDA underscored that battery energy storage systems (BESS) are increasingly critical to ASEAN’s energy transition—enabling higher renewable energy integration and improving grid flexibility and stability—while supporting regional priorities under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030 and the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) vision. The agency also noted that EU–ASEAN cooperation of this kind helps strengthen regional readiness for BESS deployment by building capacity in technology development, safety standards, financing mechanisms, and enabling policy frameworks.

The workshop brought together over 40 participants from ASEAN Member States, including clean-energy project developers, private sector representatives, power system specialists, and relevant public agencies. The programme covered both the technical and investment dimensions of BESS deployment, ranging from battery technologies and system design/integration to key application models, including utility-scale, behind-the-meter, and microgrid solutions. Sessions also addressed techno-economic evaluation, including CAPEX/OPEX analysis, NPV, IRR, and payback period calculations, equipping participants with practical tools for project development and financing discussions.
