Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with MTEC-NSTDA and the National Science Museum, recently hosted IDC RoBoCon 2023.  IDC RoBoCon is an international robot design contest aimed at nurturing and enhancing the creativity, technical skills, and global experience of aspiring young engineers.

IDC RoBoCon 2023 was held from 7-19 August 2023, under the theme “Thailand: The World’s Kitchen”. Competitors from eight countries, including Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, India, Mexico, Egypt, and Thailand, showcased their robotic ingenuity. The final round took place on 19 August 2023 during the National Science and Technology Fair 2023.

NSTDA Vice President Dr. Patchralita Chatwalitpong said that MTEC-NSTDA and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering have jointly organized the national Robot Design Contest (RDC) since 2008, aimed at strengthening the development of human resources in robotics technology.  Thailand had the privilege of hosting IDC RoBoCon for the third time this year; the previous instances were in 2007 and 2016. This international competition provides invaluable opportunities for Thai students to collaborate with their international counterparts and enhance their engineering skill.

In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, emphasized Chulalongkorn University's commitment to advancing education and workforce development in robotics and automation to support industrial growth. The university was honored to host this prestigious international contest, serving as a platform that united students from around the world to collaborate on the design and construction of remotely controlled robots. The chosen theme, "Thailand: The World's Kitchen," aimed to showcase Thai cuisine as a potent soft power.

IDC RoBoCon 2023 featured the participation of 13 teams. Over the course of 10 days, each team, consisting of 7 students from various nations, employed their skill and creativity to design and build a remotely controlled robot. In the final round, Team Purple was crowned the winner, with Team Light Blue named the first runner-up. The second runner-up prizes went to Team Navy and Team Yellow, whereas the best design award was presented to Team Navy.
