The latest edition TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers placed the Lanta system at NSTDA Supercomputer Center (ThaiSC) at the 70th spot, while ranking 1st in ASEAN with an HPL score of 8.15 PFlop/s.

Prof. Dr. Anek Laothamatas, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) remarked that this is the first time that a supercomputer from Thailand made the TOP500 list, manifesting the effort of the Thai government in bringing Thailand’s computing infrastructure to the forefront. The latest list was announced on 15 November 2022. The Lanta system took the 70th spot globally, the 20th position in Asia and the 1st place in ASEAN.

 

MHESI Permanent Secretary Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai stated that the Lanta system represents an essential infrastructure for the scientific development. The funding was allocated from the Science, Research and Innovation Fund in 2021 to establish a supercomputer system that provides cutting-edge high-performance computing resources to Thai research community and supports studies in the areas of computational science, data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).

NSTDA President Prof. Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong gave detailed information on the Lanta machine. The Lanta system is built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) based on the Cray EX system. The design features 496 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors, 704 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, 12-petabyte Cray Clusterstor E1000 storage system and HPE Slingshot Interconnect. the system has 87,296 total cores and achieves an HPL score of 8.1 PFlop/s.

Furthermore, Lanta is the first system in Thailand adopting liquid cooling technology that is more energy efficient than an air-cooled system, bringing Thailand to a green computing era.

The Lanta supercomputer is poised to support the vast array of research in the public and private domains, contributing to innovations in a wide range of fields including precision medicine, drug discovery, real-time weather forecast based on satellite images, novel material design, high-performance battery, molecular modelling, biodiversity, AI and big data analytics.
