NSTDA and Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited recently signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of an oil refinery waste management system to support a circular economy. Present at the signing ceremony were Dr. Julathep Kajornchaiyakul, Executive Director of MTEC-NSTDA, Mr. Pativat Tivasasit, Senior Executive Vice President, Bangchak Refinery Business Group, and executives of both organizations.

Under this 3-year agreement, NSTDA, which is represented by MTEC and the Technology and Informatics Institute for Sustainability (TIIS) and Bangchak will establish a waste flow database by collecting data of material flows and waste generation in oil refinery processing. The data will be analyzed in order to design suitable waste management by applying the principles of a circular economy. The project is a step up from the previous collaboration between NSTDA and Bangchak on an eco-efficiency assessment to promote sustainability in Bangchak’s refinery business.

The Thai Government has introduced Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) as a new economic model to enable sustainable development. Circular economy is based on the principles of using resources more efficiently and producing less wastes. Waste management, recycling and material recovery activities are therefore a significant part of circular economy.
