Under the Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model (BCG) introduced by the Thai government as a new economic model for inclusive and sustainable growth, medical and wellness is one of the four industrial sectors to be promoted based on the competitive strength and potential Thailand possesses. The strategy to bolster this industry includes intensive capacity building in technology and human capital in R&D and production technology for vaccines, biopharmaceuticals and medical devices, as well as clinical research and product registration of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, all in support of Thailand’s healthcare policy of promoting preventive medicine and precision medicine.

In 2019, the Genomics Thailand initiative was launched to ramp up Thailand’s competitiveness in the genomic medicine research and improve standards of medical management. Genomics Thailand is a collaborative research network to enable precision medicine which will not only greatly enhance healthcare prevention and treatment of Thai people, but also support medical and wellness tourism, one of Thailand’s best performing sectors. Under this initiative, the genomes of 50,000 Thai people will be sequenced, along with the establishment of supporting infrastructure to harness genomic information.

Learn about the landscape of Thailand’s genomic medicine research and some fascinating works undertaken by various Thai institutes, including NSTDA, Chulalongkorn University, Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Precision Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Department of Medical Sciences, and Center for Medical Genomics, in this compilation of articles.
