Delegates of Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHSRI), led by Minister Suvit Maesincee, attended STS forum 2019 held from 6 to 8 October 2019 in Kyoto, Japan. The mission provided opportunities to share the S&T progress in Thailand and discuss potential collaboration with other countries.

Minister Suvit was invited to speak in a plenary session on “Science and Technology Education for Society”. The session discussed how S&T education could effectively serve fast changing industries and carve out career paths for future workforce, as well as the need to migrate from traditional education to a life-long learning culture.

NSTDA President, Dr. Narong Sirilertworakul, joined a panel of speakers in a plenary session on “Science and Technology in Business”. In his talk, Dr. Narong underlined the vital roles that S&T has played in transforming today’s business by lowering barriers to entry. Digital technology, including AI and big data, has vastly been employed to create new business opportunities and enhance business activities, especially in augmenting customers’ experience. To avoid adverse impact of technological misuse and abuse, the government and society must come together to be aware of and anticipate the potential risks of the technologies beforehand and develop the regulations and measures to address such risks accordingly so that full benefit of these powerful technologies can be realized.

Prior to STS forum, Dr Narong also participated in the 8th Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders held on 5 October.

The Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum brings together policy makers, business leaders and media leaders from all over the world to meet and discuss science and technology issues in the modern world and to build a network that would resolve the new types of problems stemming from the application of science and technology.
