About
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation or APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 to promote free trade and economic cooperation and to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific.
At the end of the 1990s APEC’s membership included its 12 founding members – Australia, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States – as well as Chile, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), the South Pacific Forum (SPF), and the secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) maintain observer status.
APEC's 21 members aim to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration. Thailand has been a member of APEC since 1989, as one of the twelve-founding members.
APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040
“Our Vision is an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040, for the prosperity of all our people and future generations.”
APEC Putrajaya Vision is a long-term blueprint aims for an "open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040, for the prosperity of all our people and future generations." unveiled by Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting on 21 November 2020 to replace the 1994 Bogor Goals.
To achieve the vision, APEC set out three economic drivers, namely (1) trade and investment, (2) innovation and digitalization, as well as (3) strong, balanced, secure, sustainable and inclusive growth.
