TRACK YOUR HEALTH DAILY A Thai app monitors your activities during the day and facilitates taking corrective action

With the aim of creating health awareness and enabling executives and common people to monitor their well being, the National Electronics and  Computer Center (Nectec) along with the Thai Red Cross Society and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital has developed a mobile phone application called My Act.          Nectec researcher Jatuporn Chinrungrueng said My Act is a mobile application based on the Android operating system, which aims to create awareness in mobilephone users on the extent of their activities during the day via the application. Many executives, because of their lifestyle, may be faced with health issues because of lesser physical activity in their daily lives. The application will report their movement and enable them to take appropriate action for their well being.

The My Act mobile application will allow smart-phone users to track their activity all the time whenever they carry their mobile phone with them. The application will detect and classify daily activit IES. The application will come with a facility to detect activities during the day, which are divided into four classes: sleep, rest, walk, and run. It also utilises time to identify daily activities in each period. Moreover, the application also employs signal processing of accelerometer data efficiently.

“Our aim is to bring to the attention of mobile-phone users if they are doing less activity during the day, and to make them aware if the calories burned balance their activity. You might be at risk of getting sick or contracting a disease in the future. This the application will be able to bring to your attention as it records your movements and activity. It also provides information and charts so that users can check their activity Statue or calories burned each day,” said Jatuporn.

He added that the applicationi not only detects the activity of mobile users in each time period but also interprets their activity and converts it to colorie usage information. It also counts their walk and running steps automatically. It then calculates distance travelled in the daily walking and running. in addition, the application also displays a history of your activity in terms of daily, monthly or since downloading the application.

“I think the My Act application is easy to use when mobile-phone users, after installing the app, set up a few key features. Then carry  your smart phone with you while you are on the move or at rest. Your movements will be analysed and interpreted into useful information. The information will be shown as you go. No more guessing if you need a more active life to be healthier. It optionally requires a few set-up steps to make My Act monitor your activity more accurately. Information such as your weight, height and sex are needed to be entered. The informationl then will be  used to obtain your daily calorie burn,” said Jatuporn.

He said the application now only supports the Android operating system. The team plans to embrace the iOS operating system version in the near future. Moreover, the corporation will also provide disease information via the application so that user will able to access disease information as well as check risk behaviour status and information that might show possibility of the disease in the future.
