On 24 November 2023, NSTDA and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) unveiled MagikFresh, a clean air recreational park prototype for a livable city. Situated within Chatuchak Park, MagikFresh features a semi-open structure covering an area of 100 sq. m., equipped with an air purifier designed to remove PM2.5. It aims to provide the public with a space to engage in outdoor activities while enjoying clean air.

NSTDA President Prof. Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong stated that this prototype was developed under NSTDA’s smart and livable city program. It was recognized as a flagship project for 2023 by the cabinet.

Project Leader Dr. Pornanong Pongpaibool explained that MagikFresh was developed to address the challenges posed by PM2.5 air pollution in the city. The semi-open design incorporates an air circulation system to prevent external PM2.5 from entering, coupled with an innovation to enhance the removal efficiency of PM2.5. The modular structure can be easily assembled and disassembled, allowing for easy relocation. MagikFresh will undergo testing at Chatuchak Park for seven months, from November 2023 to May 2024.

Over the past 4 to 5 years, NSTDA has been actively engaged in research and development to combat the PM2.5 issue. Its research efforts are in three main areas:

  1. Mitigation: Focused on improving the quality of B10 biodiesel blend and enhancing diesel quality through the hydrotreating process.
  2. Measurement and ICT System: Involves the development of high-precision PM2.5 sensors based on the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and the use of a supercomputer for PM2.5 concentration
  3. Prevention: Resulted in the development of nMask and IonFresh+. nMask is a face mask providing protection against viruses, bacteria, microorganisms, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and PM2.5, as tested by Nelson Labs. IonFresh+ is an air purification device designed to remove both particulates and airborne pathogens.

Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, an advisor to the Bangkok Governor, said that this initiative supports BMA’s ongoing efforts to combat the PM2.5 issue. Alongside this project, BMA continues to collaborate with partners across various sectors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to address the PM2.5 problem.
