Abstract
Tea or camelia (Camelia spp.) is considered as the important crop of the world with several health benefits. The leaves are processed and consumed as the popular beverage, as well as in varieties of consumer products. While camellia leaves have established industrial applications, camellia seed oil is emerging as a significant source for functional use in nutraceuticals. However, there is currently insufficient evidence supporting its innovative potential in this field. Therapeutic properties of camelia seed oil are discussed with its sources and constituents. Innovative products containing the oil, deriving from Camelia spp., are being encouraged to serve the emerging demand on natural-, bio-, phyto- and plant-derived product as well as circular economy. Of which, the consumers’ preferences towards these sorts of product are increasing, highlighting the opportunity of this food crop aligned with the sustainable development goals where approaches on innovative application of camelia seed is indicated. © The Author(s) 2025.
