Researchers from across Southeast Asia are actively participating in the European Union Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (FP7), and have shown a significant increase in participation and funding rates over FP6.   ASEAN as a region now ranks 5th in FP7 participation after Russia, US, China and India.

ASEAN comprises the following ten countries in Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.  As of June 2013, there were 212 ASEAN participations in FP7 projects worth more than 517 million euros (2.6 billion baht) . In FP6 there were 149 participations by ASEAN partners.

ASEAN researchers are most active in the areas of Health, KBBE (Knowledge Based Bio-economy) and the Environment, and have demonstrated success rates comparable with Europe ranging from 17% in case of Indonesia to 30% for Vietnam. ASEAN researchers are also benefiting from the mobility component of FP7 with 153 researchers from the region having conducted research in Europe as Marie Curie Fellows, 17 of whom are from Thailand

Through their participation in FP7, ASEAN researchers receive more than 27 million euros (1.1 billion baht) with Thai researchers receiving 255 million baht in funding from FP7.

In accessing and participating in FP7, ASEAN researchers have been assisted by a regional network of FP7 National Contact Points (NCPs. At the launch of FP7 there were no NCPs in the region but to date there are now 58 NCPs in 8 out of 10 ASEAN countries. This network was built with support from a number of FP7 funded projects including  SEA-EU-NET(www.sea-eu.net) and INCONTACT  (www.ncp-incontact.eu).  The NCPs have been instrumental  in raising awareness about the opportunities offered by FP7,  disseminating   timely information on Call topics, and providing guidance on the general rules of participation.
