EU and Thailand open forum to raise awareness in Science & Technology for Public and Youth

December 20, 2013

Bangkok, 13 December 2013 - The Delegation of the European Union to Thailand joins hands with the National Science & Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) in organising an international conference on “Science & Technology for the Public/Youth”. The event provides a forum to exchange ideas in raising awareness in science and technology and allows an extensive discussion on effectiveness and transferability of programmes and interventions, the relations between policy-making, scientific community, and the public and media involvement.

AlmostOne hundred participants from various areas in Science and Technology; scientists, researchers, academics, private sectors and press, were present to hear from European and Thai experts who shared their experiences in science programmes and events; ranging from  big events (Science Festival, Science Week) to reach general public to small activities for kids with enquiry-based learning approach to encourage curiosity.

“The past decade has seen a substantial increase in the level of cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation between the ASEAN and the EU. ASEAN researchers are currently participating in EU Seventh Framework program (FP7) funded projects worth more than € 517 million” said Ambassador Jesus Miguel Sanz, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand. “This cooperation continues to expand as well as deepens, and involves an increasingly wide range of actors. The ASEAN-EU Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Days are being organised to highlight existing collaboration, to stimulate the network, and to identify new areas for cooperation. The next ASEAN-EU STI Days will be held in Bangkok from 21-23 January 2014 where a variety topics will be discussed including the launch of Horizon 2020 - a new EU Research and Innovation programme, almost 80 billion euros, equivalent to 100 billion US $  of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020).”

Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool, President of the National Science & Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), addressed “Science & Technology have become a big part in our lives as never before. It influences the way we think, work, communicate, learn and play. However, the awareness on the importance of science is limited to only small groups. We are fortunate to see the EU Delegation to Thailand is bringing the experts to discuss on this topic. This is a stepping stone for further collaboration in policy dialogue besides the increasing cooperation in research project”

This international conference is supported by the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand under the Thailand-European Union Policy Dialogues Support Facility (PDSF) and is the first activity after the official launch on 30 October 2013.
