The objectives of the UK-Thailand: Partners in Science initiative which was formally announced in September 2009 are as follows:
- To increase the extent of bilateral research co-operation between the two countries
- To encourage scientific collaboration and networks for mutual benefit
- To build scientific capacity within the Thai scientific community
The scientific workshops conducted under UK-Thailand: Partners in Science have spawned significant interest between Thai and UK scientists to embark on more substantial research collaboration. However one obstacle to doing this is a gap in available funding to cement these initial relationships and develop full joint research project proposals.
This gap in research funding was discussed at the UK-Thailand: Partners in Science review meeting in April 2011 between and NSTDA and the British High Commission in Singapore (BHC), the lead implementing agencies. NSTDA and the BHC agreed to address this gap in funding by launching a one-year Joint Collaboration Development Award Scheme.
The purpose of the awards is to allow researchers to spend time with potential partner institutions to gain an in-depth understanding of their research and formulate proposals for future collaborative research, which can then be put to funding bodies.
